A roof top addition to an existing 1970’s block of flats in Elwood, a beach suburb of Melbourne. The top floor apartment had no northern outlook for solar gain. It faced west with small windows to the east. The idea is to open up the apartment through the roof to a new living room/studio space connected to a roof deck garden.
The open stair is to be positioned against the proposed northern window to allow sun penetration down into the existing living space below. There are some similarities here with the Short St warehouse conversion completed 2003 which also had a stair running along a glazed wall to get deep penetration of sunlight into a deep plan.
Included in this design will be a rain tank for collection of water for the roof garden. Planting will also be used along a trellis to protect from summer sun.
